6 Days Morocco Sahara Desert Tour from Tangier to Marrakech – 2 Nights in the Desert

Your adventure begins in Tangier, where your driver picks you up from the airport, port, or your hotel. After a brief introduction, you head east toward the Andalusian-influenced town of Tetouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique blend of Moroccan and Spanish architecture.
Continue into the Rif Mountains, winding past lush hills, cedar groves, and mountain villages. Along the way, enjoy panoramic photo stops and optional breaks for mint tea.
By early afternoon, you arrive in Chefchaouen, Morocco’s famous Blue Pearl. After check-in at your traditional riad, enjoy a relaxed afternoon wandering the narrow, 

Overnight: Riad in Chefchaouen 

After breakfast, leave the Rif behind and head south into the plains of northern Morocco. Your first stop is Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman archaeological site in Morocco. Explore ancient mosaics, crumbled temples, and arches that date back nearly 2,000 years.
Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco’s lesser-known imperial cities, once the capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Highlights may include the impressive Bab Mansour, El Hedim Square, and the royal stables.
Arrive in Fes by late afternoon. After check-in at your riad in the heart of the medina, you’ll have time to relax or stroll through the nearby souks and alleys.

After breakfast, begin your long but scenic drive south toward the Sahara. Your first stop is Ifrane, a town known for its alpine architecture and fresh air — often called “Little Switzerland.”
Continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains and into the cedar forests of Azrou, home to the wild Barbary macaques. Stop for a break and a chance to observe the monkeys in their natural habitat.
Cross the high plateau of Midelt, then descend into the lush Ziz Valley, where thousands of date palms line the route to the desert.
By late afternoon, you reach Merzouga, where your camel caravan awaits. Ride into the glowing dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun sets behind the horizon. Arrive at your luxury desert camp in time for dinner, stargazing, and live Berber music around the fire.

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, a peaceful and unforgettable moment as the morning light spreads across the sands of Erg Chebbi. After breakfast at the camp, you’ll return to Merzouga village by camel or 4×4, depending on your preference.
Today is dedicated to exploring the life, culture, and landscapes of the Sahara region beyond the dunes. You’ll have the opportunity to experience: 

• 🐪 Khamlia village, home to the Black Gnawa community, enjoy a live performance of their spiritual and rhythmic music. 

• 🏜️ A visit to a nomadic Berber family, where you can sit inside a traditional tent and learn about desert life and traditions. 

• 🪨 Optional stop at a fossil site or local workshop to see how ancient sea life has been preserved in Sahara stone. 

• 🏍️ Optional activities like sandboarding, quad biking, or just relaxing in the dunes. 

In the late afternoon, check in to your desert guesthouse or kasbah-style hotel, located on the edge of the dunes. Enjoy a quiet evening with a home-cooked Moroccan dinner and a final chance to admire the desert sky filled with stars.

After breakfast at your desert guesthouse, we begin our westward journey across southern Morocco. Our first stop is the historic town of Rissani, once a major center for trans-Saharan trade and the birthplace of Morocco’s ruling dynasty.
Here, you’ll visit the region’s most authentic traditional souk — especially lively on market days — where locals trade spices, dates, fabrics, livestock, and more. It’s a chance to experience rural Moroccan life away from the tourist trail.
We then continue through desert plains and palm oases until we reach the towering walls of the Todra Gorge. Carved by the Todra River over thousands of years, the gorge features vertical cliffs that reach up to 300 meters high. Take time to stretch your legs with a short walk along the riverbed or simply take in the dramatic views.
In the afternoon, we drive through the lush palm groves of the Skoura Oasis, home to centuries-old kasbahs and traditional farming communities.
By sunset, we arrive at the UNESCO-listed Ksar Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most famous fortified village. With its ochre mudbrick walls and desert backdrop, it has been the setting for many Hollywood films. Depending on our arrival time, enjoy a short visit or relax and explore in the morning.

After breakfast, begin your morning with a guided or self-paced walk through the UNESCO-listed Ksar Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified village, built entirely from earth and straw, is a striking example of southern Moroccan architecture. Explore its maze-like alleyways, climb to the granary for panoramic desert views, and learn how this ksar once served as a caravan stop on the ancient trans-Saharan trade route.
From here, we begin the scenic journey across the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through dramatic switchbacks and winding passes, offering breathtaking views of deep valleys, Berber villages clinging to hillsides, and snow-capped peaks in the distance (in winter months).
We cross the famed Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters — the highest road pass in Morocco, before descending into the plains that lead to Marrakech.
By late afternoon, we arrive in the vibrant Red City, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or the airport.
