As the afternoon unfolds, the golden horizon of the Erg Chebbi dunes becomes visible near Merzouga, signaling your arrival at the edge of the Sahara Desert. 

In the late afternoon, begin your sunset camel trek across the dunes. The rhythm of the caravan and the changing colors of the sand create a powerful introduction to the Sahara. Upon reaching your desert camp, settle in for dinner beneath a star-filled sky — the first of your two nights in Merzouga.

The afternoon remains flexible. Relax at your desert lodge, take a walk along the dunes, or choose an optional quad ATV ride for a different perspective of the desert terrain. 

As evening approaches, the Sahara transforms once again. A second sunset over the dunes offers new colors and deeper shadows, followed by dinner and another peaceful night beneath one of Morocco’s clearest skies.

Wake early for a final sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, when the silence of the Sahara Desert feels even more profound after two nights among the dunes. After breakfast, return by camel or 4×4 to Merzouga and begin the northbound journey toward Fes. 

The road first follows the scenic oasis corridor of the Ziz Valley, where thousands of date palms stretch along the river, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding desert cliffs. Gradually, the terrain transitions from arid plains to cooler mountain landscapes. 

Continuing through the Middle Atlas Mountains, the scenery shifts again to cedar forests and alpine-style towns such as Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its European-inspired architecture and clean streets. 

By late afternoon or early evening, arrive in Fes, Morocco’s cultural and spiritual capital. After days of crossing mountains, valleys, and the Sahara Desert, the journey concludes in one of the world’s oldest living medinas.
